Changing singers isn’t easy for a band: it’s the sound and look everyone recognizes the band by. Only Seven Left decided to make their quest for a new singer a public event. First of all to find the best possible singer, but also to involve their existing fanbase in the process and maybe even broaden their audience.
For Dutch pianorock band Only Seven Left the internet has been their number one way to communicate with their fans since day 1. But when their singer Bart announced he decided to leave the band, social media became even more important for the band.
Only Seven Left started an online campaign to find their new singer: ZangerGezocht.nl. Together with Dutch online-tv-channel 5minuten.tv & Pit Group they developed a webcam social media driven interactive auditioning-platform.
Not another Idols/X-factor, but an innovative way to find a creative and ambitious musician. The band uploaded two new songs without vocals or lyrics and almost 50 singers auditioned. Talented singers, funny auditions and straight up terrible auditions. The site soon became a popular place for fans, family and strangers to discover and support the potential new band member. Visitors were able to log in and vote using Twitter, Facebook or Hyves, creating a viral effect for ZangerGezocht.
Every week the band chose a winner from the submissions and made a video about him. YouTube placed the videos on their front page (1 million clicks a day). Every Friday the week-winner was announced in Giel Beelen’s radio show on 3FM. The band and the singers practiced together, hit the studio, performed on the NS TryOut festivals and partied to get to know the week-winners.
After seven weeks two finalists were chosen to perform during the finale in De Vorstin, Hilversum. The venue sold out and finalists Lucas and Bjørgen played some songs with the band. The very first audition turned out to be the best as well: Bjørgen van Essen (18) is now Only Seven Left’s new singer. Bjørgen has the voice Only Seven Left was looking for, the ambition and motivation to match the other band members and thanks to the seven weeks competition he had already been voted favorite by many fans.
The day after the finale the band was invited to play on national television at De Wereld Draait Door because of the ZangerGezocht-story and a tour was booked in four Dutch main venues (ie Melkweg, Tivoli). At the moment Only Seven Left is recording their second album with Bjørgen.
